Developed from a research project (the results of which were presented at the International Symposium for Jewellery Technology at Santa Fe, Albuquerque, USA in 2002) carried out within Legor Group’s internal research and development laboratory, the new line of Ultracast master alloys for gold jewellery production represents a new approach to lost-wax casting and mechanical working in this fi eld. The innovative formula of Ultracast alloys can guarantee improved results even for the most demanding of goldsmiths. Version A Ultracast alloys particularly have been studied specifi cally to obtain lostwax castings of the highest quality. Version A Ultracast alloys offer accurate reproduction even of the fi nest detail combined with excellent mechanical properties and a moderate level of resistance to surface oxidation. A183N is particularly suitable for the production of high end jewellery with 3N yellow colour from lost-wax casting in closed systems and from mechanical working.
A183N has been studied specifi cally for jewellery production from lost-wax casting in the presence of a vacuum or inert atmosphere and from continuous casting. Castings obtained from A183N will show a slight brown surface oxidation which can be removed easily by standard methods of pickling in hot acid. Not recommended for stone-in-place casting. Due to its small crystal grain size and special formula, A183N possesses high deformability during cold working thus extending this alloy’s application to all types of mechanical working. The hardness of gold alloyed with A183N can be increased substantially by means of heat treatment. The absence of zinc in this alloy’s formula mean that it can also been employed successfully for fi re enamel processes. The molten metal alloyed with A183N is perfectly clean and free of any surface dross.
